Sh2-155 (Cave Nebula) is an emission nebula located 2,400 light years from the Earth in the constellation Cepheus.

This colorful skyscape features the dusty, reddish glow of Sharpless catalog emission region Sh2-155, the Cave Nebula. About 2,400 light-years away, the scene lies along the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy toward the royal northern constellation of Cepheus. Astronomical explorations of the region reveal that it has formed at the boundary of the massive Cepheus B molecular cloud and the hot, young, blue stars of the Cepheus OB 3 association. The bright rim of ionized hydrogen gas is energized by the radiation from the hot stars, dominated by the bright blue O-type star above picture center. Radiation driven ionization fronts are likely triggering collapsing cores and new star formation within. Appropriately sized for a stellar nursery, the cosmic cave is over 10 light-years across.

This nebula has a wide choice of nice features seen here, which includes quite a bit of reflection nebula seen in blue. This makes a great addition when seen against the red emission nebula. The cave part of the nebula is a nice area to point the large telescope at because of the presence of a great deal of fine structure. The brighter blue nebula can also be a good area for a very large telescope to pick up a nice reflection that looks somewhat like the Trifid Nebula. The rest of the area outside of this image is quite large, so you can pick up quite a bit of nebula with a wider field of view. However, use the hydrogen-alpha filter to help pick up the fainter area around the cave part of this object. SH2-155 also responds well to the narrowband filters, but pick a telescope that mainly has the cave shape in the image because that is where the OIII filter is the strongest.

The Cave nebula interacts with the Cepheus B molecular cloud and is ionised by stars that belong to the Cep OB3 association.

Sharpless lists 9 potential ionising stars, including the B0 class HD 217086. SIMBAD says that this object is actually a O7 Vn class young stellar object with multiple components.

Avedisova places Sh 2-155 in the massive star formation region SFR 110.15+2.61 and lists 157 components, including 24 masers, 48 infrared sources and the dark nebulae LDN 1211 and LDN 1216.
