NGC 1300
Barred Spiral Galaxy (棒渦巻銀河)
Gx SBbc

別名 (Other names)
PGC 12412, ESO 547-31, MCG -3-9-18

明るさ (Brightness)
10.3等級

星座 (Constellation)
エリダヌス座 (Eri) (Eridanus)

距離 (Distance)
6,500万光年 (65 million light-years)

One of the largest Hubble Space Telescope images ever made of a complete galaxy is being unveiled today at the American Astronomical Society meeting in San Diego, Calif.

The Hubble telescope captured a display of starlight, glowing gas, and silhouetted dark clouds of interstellar dust in this 4-foot-by-8-foot image of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300. NGC 1300 is considered to be prototypical of barred spiral galaxies. Barred spirals differ from normal spiral galaxies in that the arms of the galaxy do not spiral all the way into the center, but are connected to the two ends of a straight bar of stars containing the nucleus at its center.

This image is of NGC 1300, a spiral galaxy with arms extending from the ends of a spectacularly prominent central bar. It is considered a prototypical example of barred spiral galaxies and lies at a distance of about 65 million light-years, in the constellation of Eridanus.

The image was made in infrared light with the HAWK-I camera on ESO’s Very Large Telescope at Paranal Observatory in Chile. HAWK-I is one of the most powerful infrared imagers in the world, and this is one of the sharpest and most detailed pictures of this galaxy ever taken from Earth. The filters used were Y (shown here in dark blue), J (in light blue), H (in green), and K (in red). The field of view of the image is about 6.4 arcminutes.

Six spectacular spiral galaxies are seen in a clear new light in pictures from ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. The pictures were taken in infrared light, using the impressive power of the HAWK-I camera to help astronomers understand how the remarkable spiral patterns in galaxies form and evolve. From left to right the galaxies are NGC 5247, Messier 100 (NGC 4321), NGC 1300, NGC 4030, NGC 2997 and NGC 1232.
